The Meaning of Number 1
Numerology is the study of the mystical relationship between numbers and specific events that appear to coincide with them in the world of form.
Numbers themselves are abstract symbols that seem to be arbitrarily determined.
However, when you look a little more closely you can see that the relationships between the meanings of numbers and the coinciding events appear to have a causal relationship that can only be explained as the result of some kind of intervening intelligence.
Each number has its own vibrational essence which is somewhat like a personality or character.
When certain numbers appear you can expect their appearance to be related to specific sets of circumstances. The analysis of these relationships and the prediction of potential future circumstances is the overarching purpose of Numerology.
How Numbers Impress Themselves on Our Experience
If you really examine your life you are sure to find that numbers are popping up everywhere shaping our life experience in a variety of ways. Numbers appear in the form of times, dates, money amounts (such as prices and bank balances), distances and in terms of recurring patterns of time and space.
It does not take long to see how numerical values impress themselves on our personal experience, often in ways that we are not aware of consciously.
The Meaning of Number 1
The number 1 is one of the 9 root numbers from which all numbers other than the master numbers derive their meanings. In numerology, the characteristics of 1 that are most stressed include independence, self-sufficiency and self-determination.
Those who are informed by a 1 essence tend to act alone, assert themselves powerfully in a variety of settings and seek leadership positions in the workplace, politics and the family.
Symbolic Meaning of 1
The number one comes first in every known symbolic system. In this way 1 is primary and original. The first day of the year, the first day of the month, the first day of school or the first day of your new job. In this way the number 1 represents the beginning of any new series of events.
Some may object and say that zero is the first number, but the truth is that zero is just the lack of numbers.
Our root numbers begin with the number 1 and the divination systems that refer to numbers with special importance, like the Tarot and the I Ching, find special significance in the number 1.
The Spiritual Meaning of Number 1
When we speak in terms of patterns of time and space, whenever a pattern repeats itself we can think of it as the number 1 appearing again. New Years Day or the first of the month are beginnings of cycles of time that keeping repeating throughout time.
In the I Ching, the first hexagram or kua as they are called is Chi’en or The Creative. The first hexagram The Creative is made up completely of positive Yang energy which is depicted as a figure made up of all solid lines.
This is symbolic of that characteristic of 1 that is self assertive, original, positive and independent.
In the Tarot, the first card of the Major Arcana is The Magician or The Cobbler depending on which deck you are using. The Magician is a creative dynamo who is brimming with confidence and has big plans for his life.
When you are at the beginning of your life path, you are likely to feel that kind of independence, confidence and self sufficiency.
Number 1 as a Message From the Divine
Often, numbers appear in our experience again and again, in such coincidental ways that they are difficult to ignore. The number 1 can appear in just such a way, as a time, a date, a money value, a room number or in addresses and phone numbers.
When the number 1 appears again and again in this way, you are receiving a message that you are at the beginning of a new cycle in your life.
When number 1 appears in your experience you may be nearing a new beginning in some aspect of your life. If ones keep appearing at work, you may be on the verge of getting a new position, usually a promotion.
Keep your eyes open and look for signs of an opportunity in the horizon.
Understanding the Special Essence of Number 1
The number 1 is such an essential number that you can’t imagine any system of knowledge without it. The concept of the single, individual person is the foundation of philosophy, psychology and political action. However, being just one person, alone, can get lonely.
In the Upanishads, the Hindu sacred literature, it is said that at one time the universe was just one single being. Suddenly, that being understood itself to be alone and became lonely and afraid. It is at that point that the universe itself brought forth all of the diversity that we know of in the universe by splitting into pairs of opposites.
People may wonder why they come into this life with the life path or destiny number of 1. Often it is karma because in a past life they were lonely or afraid and did not take advantage of their creative gifts or leadership opportunities.
Just realize that anyone whose numerological chart is heavy with a 1 energy has a creative genius inside of them, who is like the Magician in the Tarot — overflowing with talent, confidence and leadership potential.
If there is a downside to being a number one it is ego. Those who have a large amount of 1 energy operating in their charts should be aware of their egos and hold them in check.
In this way, when a lot of ones appear in your experience, it could also be a warning from source energy or your guardian angel to watch your ego and not become arrogant.
